Raise Your Glass, Raise Your Voice - Celebrating World Social Justice Day

Every year on February 20th, World Social Justice Day reminds us that justice isn’t just an idea—it’s something we actively work toward in our communities, workplaces, and industries. It’s a day to reflect on the inequalities that still persist and to take meaningful steps toward a more inclusive future.

Social justice isn’t just about protests and policy changes. It’s about the everyday choices we make, including what we drink and who we support. The alcohol industry, like many others, has long been dominated by those with access to resources and networks, leaving out many talented voices. But that’s changing. By consciously choosing brands owned by those historically excluded from the industry, we help level the playing field—one bottle, one cocktail, and one conversation at a time.

Why Social Justice Matters in Every Industry

Social justice is about equity, fairness, and access. It’s about dismantling barriers that have kept certain groups from thriving in spaces that should be open to all. Historically, the alcohol industry has lacked diversity—not because of a lack of talent, but because of systemic challenges that have limited opportunities for Black, Indigenous, women, LGBTQ+, and other underrepresented entrepreneurs.

Supporting these voices isn’t just about symbolism—it’s about real economic empowerment. When we shift our spending habits toward brands that prioritize inclusion, we help these businesses grow, hire more employees, and expand their impact. It also sends a message to the larger industry: the future of alcohol is diverse, and we’re here for it.

How You Can Make an Impact

You don’t have to own a brewery or distillery to make a difference. Here are a few ways to incorporate social justice into your everyday life:

🔹 Educate Yourself & Others – Read about the history of exclusion in industries like alcohol, food, and hospitality. Follow organizations that advocate for industry equity. 🔹 Vote with Your Wallet – Supporting brands owned by historically excluded communities ensures they have the resources to thrive. 🔹 Amplify Diverse Voices – Share brands, businesses, and industry leaders doing important work. Word-of-mouth recommendations matter. 🔹 Donate or Get Involved – Organizations like the Brewers Association’s Diversity & Inclusion Committee, Women of the Vine & Spirits, and The Hue Society are working toward a more inclusive industry. 🔹 Call Your Representatives – Policy matters, and making your voice heard is one of the most powerful things you can do. Use 5calls.org to easily find the numbers and scripts for key issues you care about.

Small Actions, Big Impact

It might feel like an insignificant choice—grabbing a different bottle of wine, ordering a beer from a lesser-known brewery, swapping out your usual whiskey for something new. But these small decisions add up. When we choose brands that align with our values, we help shift the industry in a more inclusive direction.

So, this World Social Justice Day, raise a glass—not just in celebration, but in action. Because every sip, every purchase, and every conversation moves us closer to a more equitable world. Cheers to that. 🥂
