Women in Brewing

Interview with Kelissa Hieber

Owner & Head Brewer of Goldspot Brewing

In this interview, Kelissa shares her journey, her approach to brewing, and her vision for a more inclusive and vibrant beer community.

Can you share the story behind why you decided to start your company?

I started home brewing at 21 and immediately fell in love, but wasn’t seeing a lot of representation and diversity in the industry. I was working in professional organizing at the time around racial, queer and workers rights and was getting burnt out, but wanted to bring some of that into a craft brewery. I moved from Ohio to Colorado to have a better chance to learn what I needed and own a brewery. I had been working at Goldspot pretty much from the beginning and ended up becoming full owner in 2021.

How do you think your background and identity have influenced the way you run your business in the alcohol industry?

I wanted to create a space that was truly community focused and wasn’t the traditional customer base found in craft beer. We focus on not only making well balanced and creative beers, but doing everything we can to give back to the community with constant donation based beers and inclusive events.

What were your biggest challenges when you got started, and what is your biggest challenge right now?

Money and money! Ha, it’s really difficult to get the money needed as a young queer woman to buy and operate a brewery. The industry is facing challenges in every single way and honestly it gets harder everyday to keep the doors open.

What advice would you give to other aspiring entrepreneurs from diverse backgrounds who are interested in entering the alcohol production industry?

Always shoot for as much money as you can get. Assume things will be tough and focus on creating a culture of patrons that believe in your mission and will do whatever they can to support you.

What inspires you to keep going when things get hard?

I love craft beer and while it is getting more diverse it’s taken far too long and I want to see it continue to grow and improve.

Is there anything else you'd like us to know about you or your company?

One of only 5 solo women owned breweries in Colorado and one of only 2 solo queer owned breweries in Colorado.
